"Creativity takes courage" - Henri Matisse
Welcome to Art
At Acklam Whin Primary School, Art and Design is a subject designed to unlock every child’s creative potential. It is a way of learning, which is unique to the child and breaks down traditional measures of success. We encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to experiment with different skills and media; study and evaluate the work of others, and take ownership of their artistic journey with confidence and the belief that ‘you can’t get art wrong.’
Our curriculum is purposefully designed in order for children to develop knowledge and skills in the four main areas: Drawing, Painting and Mixed Media, Sculpture and 3-D, and Craft and Design.
We are committed to enabling all children to make excellent progress in their knowledge and skills in Art and Design. Our expectations for what should be achieved by the end of each year group are divided into four key areas:
- Drawing
- Painting
- Sculpture and form
- Craft and Design
Our Aims
We cover the four main areas of art: drawing, painting and mixed media, sculpture and 3D and craft and design. Our curriculum delivers a high-quality, vocabulary and knowledge-rich curriculum. We want our children to be inspired and motivated to achieve well and produce high-quality work and the profile of art to be raised. We want children to show pride in their sketchbooks- using them appropriately and producing the best quality of work possible. There should be a final piece at the end of each topic, to showcase knowledge and skills learned. Outcomes should be consistently strong across school with the support and new units planned.
Knowing more, remembering more
Every child has a sketch book to record their ideas, designs and thinking each lesson. Our sketch books are for creating, learning and developing new ideas. It is a space where children can freely express, develop, create and learn and is the centre of their creativity- their creative space.
A sketchbook is a very personal document. It records the thinking process which often leads to outcomes but the book itself becomes an art form. We encourage children to explore original ideas alongside taking inspiration from existing artists using a range of techniques.
