Computing

"Technology is best when it brings people together " Matt Mullenweg

Welcome to Computing at Acklam Whin

In line with the National Curriculum, we aim for our pupils to leave Acklam Whin as safe and responsible users of technology, with the computational knowledge and skills to succeed in the future.

We provide a computing curriculum that develops pupil’s learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge of the world around them. Ensuring all pupils can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation, can analyse problems in computational terms and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems. We intend to build a computing curriculum that prepares pupils to live safely in an increasingly digital society.

Our Aims

– Provide a high-quality computing curriculum which will prepare children for their future.
– Provide opportunities to gain knowledge, develop skills and use and understand vocabulary that will get them ready for an ever-changing digital world.
– Focus on progression of skills in computer science, information technology and digital literacy which will be revisited repeatedly to ensure the learning is embedded and skills are successfully developed over time.

Big Ideas of Computing

At Acklam Whin, our Computing curriculum follows the National Curriculum and is organised around the three Big Ideas of Computing: Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy. These Big Ideas give our teaching a clear focus and ensure pupils develop a broad and balanced understanding of how technology works and how it is used in the world around them.

Using the Acklam Whin Computing Road Map, pupils can see how their learning builds over time. They learn to recognise links between units, recall prior knowledge, and apply what they already know to new contexts. This helps them develop a strong sense of progression and a secure grasp of key concepts.

Children talk confidently about the Big Ideas and use correct vocabulary to explain their learning. As they move through school, they are increasingly able to retrieve and build upon what they have done before, allowing them to form a rich and connected understanding of the Computing curriculum.

Online Safety

At Acklam Whin, we use 2BeSafe, an online safety scheme of work published by 2Simple, to ensure we meet the expectations set out in the Department for Education’s Education for a Connected World framework. This framework identifies eight key areas designed to equip children with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate digital life safely and responsibly.

2BeSafe provides comprehensive coverage of these areas across the primary phase, from Reception through to Year 6, ensuring pupils receive consistent, age-appropriate teaching throughout their time at school.

We also complement and reinforce our online safety teaching through our weekly Jigsaw PSHE lessons. This helps pupils build a secure understanding of how to stay safe online, make responsible choices, and understand their rights and responsibilities in the digital world.

Knowing More, Remembering More

PCSO

At Acklam Whin, we are fortunate to work closely with our local PCSO, who regularly visits school to speak with pupils about the importance of staying safe online. These sessions help reinforce key messages from our curriculum and provide children with real-life guidance from a trusted community figure.

Parents Meetings

We also hold termly parent meetings focused on online safety. These sessions offer practical advice, highlight current online risks, and support families in keeping children safe both at home and at school.

Online Safety Newsletter

As part of our commitment to supporting the whole school community, we send out a monthly Online Safety Newsletter. This provides parents with up-to-date guidance, useful tips, and clear information about how to help children use technology safely and responsibly at home.

National Online Safety

We are a registered National Online Safety school. We offer support and a platform of content for parents/carers and children. We can offer a full suite of CPD on the latest policy, practice and research, available to you anytime, anywhere and on any device.

My App Login

In order to make it simple as possible for children to log in to school resources at home we have linked all of ourhome learning apps in one place; Wonde. We have provided children in Year 1-6 with a Wonde account which is accessible using a unique personal Magic Badge (QR Code) or emoji password.

About Wonde

Wonde Single sign-on (SSO) is an authentication process that allows each pupil access to multiple applications with one set of login credentials (their Magic Badge). This means that they do not need to remember lots of different login details and all applications are in one secure location.

How to access Wonde:

Your child(ren) will have been given a unique Magic Badge by their teacher or the school office. Visit app.mylogin.com/acklamwhin on your internet browser and click “Login with Magic Badge” or Emoji password. You may need to give permission to use your camera to show the QR code to your device.

There is no additional password to remember; please keep your QR code safe.

Once logged in they will be greeted with a dashboard where they will have access to the school resources including Times Table Rock Stars, Spelling Shed, 2 Simple (Purple Mash) and Num Bots.

School Logins

Purple Mash is an award-winning cross-curricular website for nursery and primary school children. It enables children to explore and enhance their knowledge in a fun and creative way.

The Purple Mash Computing Scheme of Work is a comprehensive set of resources aligned to the National Curricula for Computing, Technology and Digital Competence. It exposes children to a wide variety of digital tools, technological skills, and innovations. It contains everything that is needed to deliver inspiring and engaging lessons whilst allowing for the flexibility to meet individual needs. We have included additional units that go beyond the expectations of National Curricula, whilst also providing ‘Catch-Up’ units to close gaps in learning.

We are a registered National Online Safety school. We offer support and a platform of content for parents/carers and children. We can offer a full suite of CPD on the latest policy, practice and research, available to you anytime, anywhere and on any device.
