Weekly Update ☀️
We have had a very successful week of school sport competitions at Acklam Whin! We attended two Sports Hall Athletics Competitions with the Years 3 and 4 and the Years 5 and 6 on Wednesday. Our children were competing against 15 other schools across a range of track and field events with all scores being put together at the end to give an overall score!
Our Y3/4 children finished in first place; this is the first time we have ever won a Sports Hall Athletics competition, and our Y5/6 children finished runners up to a very talented Whinney Banks team!
We are so proud of their achievements.

As we get towards the end of November, we are looking forward to the festive seasons and welcoming everyone to our Christmas Fayre on Thursday. There will be lots of festive stalls and activities for the whole family to enjoy.
St Margaret’s Church are having a Nativity Festival on Friday 28th, Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th November. They invite our families and the community to attend, and this will include carols being sung at the end of Festival service at 5.30pm on the Sunday (see poster below).
We hope everyone has a lovely weekend.
Class Round Up
Enjoy finding out what some of our Upper KS2 classes have been doing in their learning…
Year 5
Year 5 have enjoyed lots of engaging learning over the last few weeks. In Science, as part of their Materials work, they undertook an investigation to find out how the number of cubes affected how long it took for sugar cubes to dissolve in coloured water to form a solution. Careful observations and timing were involved before the results were recorded in a table.

In Design and Technology, we loved learning about Greek food before designing, making and evaluating their own Greek Flatbreads. There were some imaginative flavours chosen including feta cheese, pomegranate and olives and the children worked well in pairs to make the dough for their Flatbreads! Their evaluations were very honest, suggesting how changes could be made (or not) if they made them again at home.

Our PSHE work around Being Me in My World, included a task where we had to work in teams of four to build the tallest tower possible with only rolls of paper and masking tape. We undertook the task twice, both with and without having defined roles, and then we discussed which way we preferred. Following this, we compiled a list of rules which should be followed in the future when we work in teams. We called this our Learning Charter.

Year 6
This week, Year 6 have started their Autumn 2 DT topic – sewing a hanging decoration. To prepare, the class have been practising a range of sewing skills. This has including a running stitch, back stitch, cross stitch and a blanket stitch. Some of these were tricky at first, but everyone showed fantastic perseverance and kept going, even when the stitches didn’t quite work out the first time! Their resilience and determination really shone through. We’re excited to see how these skills will help them create their final decorations over the next few weeks.

Book Shop

As the nights are drawing in and more of us are tucked up at home thinking about the 25th of December, we have decided to run an online bookshop. This will allow you to purchase discounted books while raising funds for the school. The shop is only open until the 30th of November, but every purchase will help keep our library stocked with the latest titles. We have attached two links to leaflets to provide some inspiration, the first is primary and the second is for pre-teens.
Thank you for your continued support, and happy shopping!
Attendance Matters
It is so important that we see your children in school every day as any missed days means missed learning. We have had a very positive start to the new term.
There are our attendance figures for this week:

Overall 94.5%
Congratulations to Class 614 for winning the attendance trophy with 98%.
Also, Class R02, Class 103, Class 308 and Class 409 who also got over 96%.
Lots of illness this week, but let’s aim for even more classes in the green next week.

Reminders
*Thank you to everyone who has named their child’s uniform; this really helps us to return any lost property to its rightful owner, and we would encourage all parents to make sure that uniform is named please.
*As the weather has turned much wetter and colder, please can you ensure that the children have a suitable coat in school each day. Many thanks.
