Online Safety

The internet has become an essential part of life, allowing us access to a wealth of information as well as enabling us to communicate with others in a variety of ways. As our children grow, their exposure and access to technology and the online world increases, which is why at Acklam Whin we strive to ensure our children are prepared for the positive and negative experiences they may encounter.

Due to the ever-changing nature of technology, we teach children the ‘SMART rules’ to give them the tools to approach a range of online situations with confidence and resilience. These rules aim to help children keep their data and identity private, discourage them from meeting or accepting messages from strangers, consider the reliability of information sources and to remind them to speak to a trusted adult if anything online is causing them concern or upset.

To support staff and parents, we subscribe to National Online Safety. This resource can be accessed via the link below and offers a parent course as well as a consistently updated bank of app guides. Each guide gives an overview of the apps content, outlines any potential safety risks to your child or financial risk to you and also gives details of how to amend settings to ensure our children are safe.

In addition to our regular and responsive online safety lessons and assemblies, we have also built a great relationship with Cleveland Police’s School Liaison Officer, who delivers online safety lessons across school multiple times a year.

We positively discourage any unsupervised use of these sites at home.
