WEEKLY BLOG – Friday 3rd May 2024

Weekly Update

We have had an eventful week with the Year 5 children visiting the Life Centre in Newcastle and the Year 4 children having a visit from the Owl Centre to enhance their curriculum work (see below).

We are so proud of our Year 6 children who have been working hard in the build up to their SATs as well as undertaking their Acklam Whinner responsibilities. We are sure they will use the next week wisely to be prepared for the week of the 13th May.

In assembly, our theme was Democracy, one of the British Values.  We linked this to the Nursery being used as a Polling Station on Thursday in the local elections.

We hope that everyone has a lovely bank holiday weekend, and we will see everyone back in school on Tuesday 7th May.

Class Round Up

Enjoy finding out what some of our KS2 classes have been doing in their learning…

Year Four

Year 4 were visited by Craig from the Owl centre in Redcar this week, who brought along a variety of animals as part of our science topic on living things and their habitats. Craig explained to them the adaptions each animal had developed to live in their country of origin. We were visited by Fred the Tenrec, Alien the Snake, Violet Tarantula and The Crazy Duck. The children loved the experience of seeing and handling these exotic creatures and some of them even faced their fears of Spiders with the help of Violet.

Year Five

Year 5 went to The Life Centre in Newcastle this week. They had the best time! The children visited the WOW zone, took part in a light and colour workshop, a space workshop and visited a replica of the ISS! I think everyone’s favourite part was visiting the planetarium , where they studied the night’s sky and explored the constellation Virgo.

Year 6

Over the past couple of weeks, Y6 have taken part in a number of webinars. We met the author of Greenwild – Pari Thompson – who spoke about how different plants inspired her to create her own fictional world. She explained the writing process and how her ideas have changed over time.
Today, we joined a webinar promoting Mental Health Champions. We discovered new strategies to support us when we feel overwhelmed and stressed. A number of us thought that having Mental Health Champions in school would be a great idea.

Attendance Matters

It is so important that we see your children in school every day as any missed days means missed learning.

There are our attendance figures for this week:

Overall  96%

Well done to the 10 classes who got over 96% this week and for Class 307 for having the best attendance in school.

This has been the best attendance week so far this year. Let’s keep it up and aim for even more green and even some classes with 100% next week!

Just a reminder that school cannot authorise holidays in term time except in exceptional circumstances.

This edition they have some fantastic content from  the team about staff wellbeing and support for students during their SATs week.

During SATs week it is also Mental Health Awareness Week (13th May) hosted by the Mental Health Foundation who have some fantastic resources to start you off sharing this year’s theme around Movement.

Mental Health Awareness Week 2024 will take place from 13 to 19 May, on the theme of “Movement: Moving more for our mental health”.

Movement is important for our mental health, but so many of us struggle to move enough. We know there are many different reasons for this, so this Mental Health Awareness Week we want to help people to find moments for movement in their daily routines. Going for a walk in your neighbourhood, putting on your favourite music and dancing around the living room, chair exercises when you’re watching television – it all counts!
