Weekly Update
Acklam Whin have had a very successful week. On Wednesday, our Year 4 girls became Yorkshire Cricket Champions which is a fantastic achievement. They had some great matches at York Cricket Club and came out victorious. Our Year 4 boys’ teams also had great success at the football competition at the Sports Village, with Acklam Whin A team becoming the Boys Middlesbrough Champions and our other teams getting runner up and 3rd place in their rounds. We are so proud of all our children who took part and represented Acklam Whin so well.
We welcomed the parents of our new Reception children on Monday night; it was lovely to meet everyone, and we hope you found the new starters meeting very helpful.
Year 3 had a lovely Parental Partnership afternoon on Thursday, designing clay tiles linked to their science unit of work and making sun catchers. There were some very creative ideas, and we can’t wait to see your finished tiles.
The Nursery Teddy Bears’ Picnic was a gorgeous ending to the week, where our youngest children thoroughly enjoyed the time with their families.
Next week, we wish our Year 6 children good luck on their transition days to their new secondary school. Most children will experience some days at their new schools, and we hope it makes you feel settled and ready for the next stage of their education in September. There will also be opportunities for the children in school to meet their new teachers over the next two weeks also.
We will also welcome everyone to our sports days which are on Tuesday or Thursday (please see the app message for specific times).
Finally, we want to say a HUGE thank you to all our wonderful families, staff, volunteers and wider community who joined us at our Summer Fayre. There was an amazing turnout, and it was lovely to see all the smiling faces enjoying the games, stalls, refreshments and entertainment. The rides and donkeys were very popular, as was Mr Armstrong in the stocks who took one for the team! Thank you for coming and being such an important part of our school community and supporting us so well (especially when there was an important England match to watch!) The total raised was over 2000 pounds.

Year 5
Year 5 had a great time on Wednesday when they attended Middlesbrough Town Hall for the Big Boro Book Bash, organised by the National Literacy Trust Middlesbrough. We were inspired by a varied selection of authors including: Gary Northfields, Sara Dennis, Lisette Auton and Robin Stevens. We even received a goody bag each containing a book and other treats.
We thoroughly enjoyed making our Cookie Sticks for the Summer Fayre, and they went down very well with everyone there.
Last week, the winners of our school Poetry Slam competition represented Acklam Whin in the Middlesbrough competition at the Town Hall. Both teams – The Acklam Whin Poets and the The Funky Flamingos – performed their poems brilliantly on the large stage. We were so proud of both teams with The Funky Flamingos getting joint second place overall. A huge thank you to the National Literacy Trust Middlesbrough for organising the event and to Oxford University Press and The Works who provided prizes for the event.
Year 6
Attendance
It is so important that we see your children in school every day as any missed days means missed learning.
There are our attendance figures for this week:
Overall 94.1%
(We have had a few poor weeks with attendance and we want to try and get more classes over 96% next week!)
A big well done to Class 205 and Class 307 for winning the attendance this week, as well as Class R02, Class 308, Class 410 and Class 511 who all got over 96%.
Reminders
Reminders
- Please can we remind all children and parents that bikes and scooters should not be ridden on the school playground. Please jump off your vehicle and push it along to avoid any accidents.
- Please can we remind you that children should be wearing black school shoes with their uniform on non-PE days. On PE days, only black or white trainers should be worn with their PE kit.
- Thank you to everyone who has named their child’s uniform; this really helps us to return any lost property to its rightful owner, and we would encourage all parents to make sure that uniform is named please.
