WEEKLY BLOG – Friday 12th June

Weekly Update

A busy week in school with lots of sporting events surviving the unpredictable weather. Mr Jackson took children to several cricket events where the children represented Acklam Whin so well. Well done to the Year 6 girls who came fourth in their event and to the Year 4 boys who were runners up in the North Yorkshire finals. The Year 5/6 team also had a great day today being pipped at the post in the final – they got a very well-deserved silver metal! Many congratulations to you all!

Year 2 had a fun packed day at Preston Park and made the most of their activities even in the rain (see below).

A big well done to our Year 1 and Year 4 children who completed their Phonics and Multiplication Tables Checks this week; the children have been working so hard, and we are very proud of you.

Next Friday is our Chocolate Day where children are invited to come in non-uniform in exchange for bringing some chocolate or sweets products to use at our Summer Fayre on the 1st July.

Many thanks to everyone who has already completed our parent/carer survey. Just a reminder that if you would like to share your views, it is open until the 15th June.

Thank you for your ongoing support and have a lovely weekend.

Class Round Up

Read on to find out what some of our classes have been doing in their learning:

Year 1

In English this week, Year 1have been learning how to write riddles. We thought carefully about the clues we could give and used descriptive language to help the reader guess the answer. We thoroughly enjoyed creating our own riddles and then we shared our finished work, reading aloud to a partner.  📝❓😊

In DT, we have been designing and making models of playground equipment such as swings, slides, and climbing frames. We carefully planned our designs before using a range of materials and joining techniques to create our models. We showed great creativity, problem-solving skills and perseverance as we tried to make our playground equipment strong, stable and fit for purpose. 🎠🛝🏗️✨

Well done, Year 1, for another fantastic week of learning! 🌟

Year 6

Year 6 had a wonderful time last week taking part in a special History Day, bringing their learning about the Ancient Maya civilisation to life. We were delighted to welcome One Day Creative into Acklam Whin, where the children enjoyed an immersive and interactive workshop linked to their history topic.
Throughout the day, pupils explored where the Maya fit within the historical timeline and discovered how this remarkable civilisation developed and thrived. They learned about the different roles people held within Maya society, from rulers and priests to farmers and craftsmen, and gained an insight into the beliefs and traditions that shaped everyday life.
Through a range of engaging activities, drama, discussions and hands-on experiences, the children were encouraged to think like historians and deepen their understanding of the past. Their enthusiasm, curiosity and participation throughout the day were fantastic to see.
It was a memorable experience that not only enhanced the children’s learning but also inspired them to ask questions, make connections and develop a greater appreciation of this fascinating ancient civilisation. We are incredibly proud of how engaged and enthusiastic Year 6 were throughout the workshop.

Attendance

It is so important that we see your children in school every day as any missed days means missed learning.

There are our attendance figures for this week:

Overall 95.6%

A big well done to Class 512 for winning attendance this week as well as Class R01, Class 103, Class 104, Class 205, Class 206, Class 308, Class 512 and Class 512 who all got over 96%.

Let’s keep this up and aim for even more children getting over 96% this term.

Reminders

Reminders

  • Please can we remind all children and parents that bikes and scooters should not be ridden on the school playground. Please jump off your vehicle and push it along to avoid any accidents.
  • Please can we remind you that children should be wearing black school shoes with their uniform on non-PE days. On PE days, only black or white trainers should be worn with their PE kit.
  • Thank you to everyone who has named their child’s uniform; this really helps us to return any lost property to its rightful owner, and we would encourage all parents to make sure that uniform is named please.
